Time is running out for Floridians in Helene’s path, as it threatens to be the strongest storm to make landfall in the U.S. in over a year.
Helene formed in the northwestern Caribbean Sea on Tuesday morning and is rapidly strengthening. It could escalate from a 45 mph tropical storm to a Category 3 major hurricane within 48 hours due to the extremely warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
This accelerated timeline means Floridians need to prepare now for damaging winds, flooding rainfall, and potentially life-threatening storm surge. The National Hurricane Center warns that Helene’s track could shift in the coming days, altering where its worst impacts occur.
The Southeast should also prepare, as Helene will be exceptionally large and powerful, impacting areas far beyond Florida. Torrential rain, strong winds capable of causing significant power outages, and the threat of tornadoes will extend into the region.
Evacuations are likely on Tuesday for coastal areas of Florida facing potentially life-threatening storm surge. Taylor County in Florida’s Big Bend region is expected to issue a county-wide evacuation order later Tuesday, according to a social media post from the sheriff’s office. More.....
