The storm is expected to grow into a massive, sprawling system, impacting not just Florida but much of the Southeast. With time running out, thousands of Florida residents have already been evacuated, and nearly the entire state is under tropical alerts due to the threat of flooding rainfall, damaging winds, and life-threatening storm surge.
Helene is projected to make landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast, likely in the Big Bend region, late Thursday. It could reach Category 3 strength, fueled by the extremely warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Rapidly intensifying storms like Helene are becoming more frequent due to global warming from fossil fuel pollution.
This hurricane will be the fourth to make landfall in the US this year and the fifth to hit Florida since 2022.
Port Richey resident Rick Way expressed his concerns to CNN affiliate WFTS, saying, “If you’re a godly person, pray, because I don’t really need this. Neither do any of us.”
Unlike Hurricane Idalia and other recent storms, Helene is forecast to become one of the largest storms in the Gulf of Mexico over the last century, according to hurricane expert Michael Lowry. This means more storm surge and widespread impacts, even with the storm’s center far from the coast.
